Win an autographed copy of George R. R. Martin's A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

Thanks to the cool folks at Bantam Dell, I have one autographed copy of George R. R. Martin's A Dance With Dragons up for grabs! For more info about this title: (Canada, USA, Europe).

Here's the blurb:

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever.

Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all
.

The rules are the same as usual. You need to send an email at reviews@(no-spam)gryphonwood.net with the header "DANCE." Remember to remove the "no spam" thingy.

Second, your email must contain your full mailing address (that's snail mail!), otherwise your message will be deleted.

Lastly, multiple entries will disqualify whoever sends them. And please include your screen name and the message boards that you frequent using it, if you do hang out on a particular MB.

But there is a twist to this giveaway, one suggested by GRRM's editor, Anne Groell. You may or may not know that Martin and I had a little NFL wager for three straight years. Yeah, it took me three years to win. GRRM was rooting for the New York Giants, while I've always been a Dallas Cowboys fan. If the Giants finished on top at the end of the season, GRRM would then assign me three novels to read and review. The point of this was to give exposure to works and authors GRRM felt deserved more visibility. However, if I won, then he would base a character on me and butcher him violently.

Long story short, I finally won. After watching the hated Giants win a Super Bowl, true, but I did win in the end. Enter Ser Patrek of King's Mountain (GRRM and I met in Montreal during Worldcon). I'm told that Ser Patrek's heraldry even relates to the football team he despises. In case you're wondering, it's humanly impossible to like both the Giants and the Cowboys. That's just the way it goes. Let it go. . .

Which brings us to this twist: In order to win this signed copy of A Dance With Dragons, you must guess the answer to this important question:

How do you think Ser Patrek of King's Mountain will die?

a) flamed to a crisp by a dragon
b) devoured by wolves
c) pulled apart by a giant
d) burned at the stake
e) baked in a pie

All, of course, being deaths that happen in the manuscript to SOMEONE!

Your email must include your contact details AND the answer to this question. You must also submit your answer in the survey section. A winner will be randomly selected among those who came up with the right answer. Also, keep in mind that GRRM will sign your copy when he goes to NYC as part of his book tour. So the prize will reach the winner a few weeks after pub date.

Good luck to all the participants!

  3. Silly question, where's the "survey section" you mention? I answered the question with my answer, now am not sure I did it right (format wise)

    Thanks!

  4. Pat what do you mean by this? " You must also submit your answer in the survey section."

hmm, so pulled apart by a giant, tied to a stake, burnt by a dragon, turned into a pie and devoured by wolves? eh? :P

  6. Sorry if I'm missing something, but what do you mean by also including the answer in the 'survey section'? Do you mean here in the comments? I will go with roasted by a dragon!

  7. Whoa, I just realized that you said each of those deaths actually happen. I'll have to change my answer to pulled apart by a giant. Seems too obvious, though...

  8. Baked in a pie! Delish?

Thanks for the chance to win.

Someone gets baked in a pie? It's not the 'who gets baked' that's a mystery so much as the 'who would do the baking?'

  11. The survey section is on top of the middle column on the right...

  12. Stupid me sent of the email before I finished reading the 'extra' requirement to enter so I'm out of the running. Oh well!

    Good luck everyone!

  13. I think a spoiler warning would be nice, if all of those various deaths really do happen in the manuscript. I would rather not have known.

  14. Megan are you kidding me? You're calling Pat out for a "Spoiler Alert" because he mentioned that all of those deaths happen in the book. He didn't say when, where, or to whom. Its A Song of Ice and Fire book, people die all of the time and in very painful ways.

The poll is at the top of the blog next to the actual written column.

  15. Thank you so much for this awesome giveaway! :) Fingers crossed!

  16. My answer (already e-mailed) was (c) pulled apart by a giant. It's poetic justice.

  17. Pat, I'm new to your site and love it. Great giveaway! I voted for devoured by wolves. I know it's not the "giants" theme, but I'm partial to wolves.

  18. Hey guys the survey section is waay at the top where you vote. At least that's where I put my answer of being devoured by wolves at! :)

  19. I definitely think that Ser Patrek will be eaten by wolves - led by Nymeria, of course!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I’m going to guess Set aflame by Dragonfire.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have to go with a giant. I think somewhere you said he was in the north so that makes the most sense.

    ReplyDelete
  22. burned at the stake!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The survey is of course the little poll he has on his website, it also gives you a good idea to pick a choice that not a lot of people have picked!

Already e-mailed my answer, and I chose C) Ripped apart by a giant. Just seemed the most plausible for a non-main character with the title "Ser."

  25. I chose "pulled apart by a giant." As said above, it seems too obvious but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  26. I'll say Burned at the stake.

    d) burned at the stake.

  28. I put ripped apart by the giant.

My guess is someone named Ser Patrek of King's Mountain is from Stannis's realm, based on Dragonstone. That would make him somewhere on the wall now.

  29. There's the survey section! *looks around innocently* Thanks Pat! I voted for Pulled Apart By Giants!
