Musical Interlude

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Uploaded by ziksoft

As Metallica is beginning another world tour, I can't help but feel bad that most fans nowadays have never seen the "real" Metallica. Indeed, like many old fans, I think a big part of the band died when they went "commercial" with the black album. Musically, things have never been the same since.

I saw them three times during that tour (yes, I was there during the riot following the Metallica/Guns N' Roses doubleheader at the Olympic Stadium), and clearly they were no longer the same band as before.

So here's one of their very best tracks, shot during the ...And Justice for All tour. That's the Metallica I fell in love with. And that's the Metallica I'll always remember. . .

gotta say after Cliff Burton died they just weren't the same. The first 3 albums are the only ones I listen to now

Funny. I was watching it & thinking: they don't need a master bass player or some stringracer for virtuoso solo's. They have James Hetfield. For better or worse, Metallica = Hetfield. When he's not in shape, there is no band. There are still people who think Dave Mustaine is god, but for Metallica the deity is the lead singer / songwriter.

BTW, have you noticed that bass is back? I mean, the bass sound gives old records a kind of... swing. DM features more of an heavy, pushy, almost 80s bass sound, but it is definitely back. Melody is back too. [thank god for that ;) ]

BTW2: why is there so little music, let alone metal, in sf? Tolkien wrote lyrics for LOTR (and since he sang them too, there was a melody to it too), but that's not what I mean. Musice is very important for humans and science is only now beginning to understand, but it's not in sf. Why?

I saw Metallica for the first time ten years ago, and I made a point of seeing them whenever I could in the years that followed. However, after their two concerts here in Oslo in 2003, I just can't be bothered anymore. They're not a hard-fuckin'-rock band anymore, they're a franchise, and there's dozens of lesser known bands playing here every year that's I'd rather see 'cause they're BETTER.

I lost my respect for Metallica during the napster fiasco, though I agree that the black release, while good, marks a departure in their sound.

I pretty much agree with what has been said here. I've been a fan since just before Cliff Burton died. I drifted away from the band after the Black album, but did like some of the songs on Load and Reload. St Anger was atrocious but DM is a big improvement. My biggest complaint is the length of time in between albums. 5-7 years is a long time to wait.

BTW, why the fuck is Flea , of all people, inducting Metallica into the HoF?

I went to see Metallica a couple of weeks ago on their latest tour, having seen them about a decade ago prior to this.

I have to say it was a great show with brilliant lighting and a round stage in the centre of the arena and they were great.

They also played a few of what I call the oldies from those first 3 albums.

For me you really hear how good music and bands are live and Metallica did not disappoint.

Great video, and I completely agree that Metallica sucked after And Justice, but it's a pity this video didn't have the proper Metallica lineup, with Cliff on bass.

I know a lot of people who love (old) Metallica and love to read fantasy. Do you suppose there's a connection?
