The limited edition of Rothfuss' "Not a Kid's" book, The Adventure of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle sold out in two days, and more than 50% of the print run for the trade hardcover has already been pre-ordered. And that, more than six months prior to the book's release date!
Here's the blurb:
This is not a book for children.
It looks like a children's book. It has pictures. It has a saccharine-sweet title. The main characters are a little girl and her teddy bear. But all of that is just protective coloration. The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales.
There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it.
The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in.
Simply said: This is not a book for children.

Do you know if you have to preorder it from the seller or will it also be released to bookstores, too? I'm sure I could get it cheaper from a bookstore...
Bill at Subterranean put a note on the website that the trade (2000 copies) is over half sold out already. He said unless they increase the run, they might not have enough for Amazon.
chances are its only going to be available from subpress, and thats guaranteed if they sell the other 1000 copies preorder.
i got their newsletter and thought i'd buy the limited edition as an xmas present to myself (even though its not out for months!), but i didnt know it was only available from that day onwards. turns out im a lucky sod!
its always worth getting the subpress and ps publishing newsletters as some awesome books go under the radar
rory
im on it.
Order it from SubPress. The price is completely worth doing it. It's not like the book is $50 or something. It is only $25. If you can't afford $25, you have bigger worries on your hands, I think, than buying a book. :)
Course, this is a book that will be pricey on the secondary market... Best to ensure you get it from SubPress. I have no doubt the book will be severely allocated to bookstores.
I've ordered it now. It's just the principle of the matter. I rarely ever buy new books. I prefer a used, second-hand copy, which is good environmentally and financially. But for Pat Rothfuss, I'll gladly make an exception.
I really want to buy this, I loved TNotW, and Sub press makes beautiful books, but thats an expensive 59 page "not a kids book" kids book.
