Good call on Ruckley; I've just finished the trilogy and while it's pretty grim, it's a cracking read.
I've not read enough of these yet. Though I do own the opening book in a lot of these series. Just haven't gotten around to them yet. Siren call of the bookstore be damned.

Many that I like but I would put Steven Erikson at the very top of that list...

Pat, you should absolutely add The Sun Sword series by Michelle West. One of the best fantasy series I have ever read, and I don't think enough people know about it
I thought that the Imager Portfolio was as good as the The Saga of Recluce.
