Madness is often the only sanity left, when hope alone serves the living..

Ah, what a perfect example of a Bakker quote... Read it fast enough and it appears to be saying something profound... pause to chew on it at all, and taste the BS immediately... There were dozens of such lines in The Darkness That Comes Before... it was a marvel to me... Empty crackers, Pat... still not sure why his work resonates with you so strongly... Whatever it is you bring with you into the reading of Bakker, I envy it... I seem to lack it completely...

RSB resonates with me more than any other author I've read. To each their own I suppose.

david wagner : finally someone who understands. i can't for the life of me figure what people are so impressed with in bakker's books.
i'm also pretty sure he's the one who coined the phrase "speculative fiction" ( i first saw him use it ) and it struck me as a douche who just to impress people and is somehow embarrassed to be writing sci-fi, so he had to add some fancy title to it.

While I on the other hand can't for the life of me figure out how someone who calls themselves S&S or fantasy fans not find his work utterly impressive.
I guess people are still happy reading about dwarves and elves and orcs...

Oh well, you can only lead a horse to water.

Machinery: Although I think it would be super cool if Bakker came up with the term "speculative fiction", I'm pretty sure that term has been around for close to a hundred years.

Can't wait for this book!

to anonymoud, regarding dwarves elves and what not.
sure why not, if it's well written.
take the sword, ring, chalice books by deborah chester for example, or ramond e. feist (at least the early ones) and rick cook's wizardry series.
if you're dismissive of that because of bakker's books then you're fooling yourself.
bakker is a terrible writer imo. with a terrible story.
