New Poll: Who's your favorite SFF artist?

The results from our last poll have been tallied. The question was:

What are your thoughts regarding Suvudu.com, Random House's new SFF blog?

231 votes were cast:

- Interesting contributors, insightful content, and neat layout. All in all, a great addition to the SFF Blogosphere. (60 votes, 25%)

- Kind of "meh." I have to admit that I was expecting more from such a powerhouse in SFF publishing. (39 votes, 16%)

- Disappointing. Too little too late, I think. And most of the content can already be found on established sites by independent bloggers. (26 votes, 11%)

- I haven't been paying attention to Suvudu.com at all since its creation. (106 votes, 45%)

Well, it's obvious from the results and the low number of votes that Random House's SFF imprints have to do a little more to get the word about Suvudu out there. All the voters are members of the online community, and 45% of them haven't even checked out the website...

Our new survey asks you who's your favorite SFF artist? If your favorite is not among the selections, feel free to leave a comment with his or her name.:-) Here are a few samples from Komarck, Martiniere, Picacio, Lockwood, and Chong.

I've always quite liked Louis Royo. I will have to look into these other artists :)

Too many talented artists left off this poll in my opinion: Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Chris McGrath, Dan Dos Santos, Donato Giancola, Jon Foster, Tom Kidd, Stephen Youll, Vance Kovacs, Bob Eggleton, John Jude Palencar, Dave McKean, Dave Seeley, Michael Kaluta and many others that I can't remember at the moment...

I'm not that familiar with the artists: are there really so few females?

Sadly, I couldn't include all the good artists out there. So I basically went with what I remembered of this year's Hugo ballot and a few others that came to mind...

As for female artists, I'm not familiar enough with that side of the industry to know if there are many of them. Maybe someone better informed could shed some light on the matter?

None of the above.

As much as I like Komarck (his work on Gardens... looks superb and his covers for Gail Z. Martin's Necromancer series are outstanding), I prefer Raymond Swanland's work (see the new omnibus collections of Cook's Black Company or the Night Shade editions of Cook's Dread Empire for examples).

I am not a fan of Lockwood's art at all. I wish Tor had never picked him to do the Malazan covers. His work is mediocre on it's own, but as a book cover it looks like standard fantasy tripe. It is a complete turnoff whenever I see it in the bookstore.

The new UK Malazan covers look fantastic. They look dark, as they should be. Lockwood's work often features out of proportion humanoids (Toll the Hounds cover), or caricatures of people, something appearing comical (The Bonehunters cover) or dogs that look like big cats (again, the Toll the Hounds cover).

I agree with Robert, the artists noted there all produce outstanding work, in particular I like McGrath. Though lets not forget one of the giants...Frank Frazetta.

John Howe is my favourite.

Brom is my favourite, his art is stunning.

Also have a soft spot for Geoff Taylor and Clyde Caldwell.

Starting to get into Kormarck - his work on GOTM special ed is amazing. Lockwood is a great artist but his stuff for Malazan has been totally atrocious. Atrocious.

My favorite one is a french artist, Manchu, who has done art for most of the great SF writers published in Frabce (Banks, Clarke, Silverberg, Dick, Asimov, Brin, Benford, Bear, Baxter, Vinge, R.C. Wilson, Farmer, Spinrad, Stross, Egan, Stephenson, Reed, etc.).
You can find some of his works on his site : http://www.manchu-sf.com/spip.php?article59

Not sure how active he still is, but Jim Burns' covers during the '90's for the work of Silverberg and Brin (among many others) has always been top notch

Had to choose "none of the above". Noone pointed out some of the best oldschool artists from Poland - well, maybe they are better known locally than they are globally :)

Anyway, have a look at:
http://www.beksinski.com.pl/
(I think only the flash version works properly)
Few years ago Tomek Baginski created 6 minute animated movie titled "Cathedral", which won some very prestigious awards around the world - You can watch it here:

It's very much inspirated by Beksinski's works :)

It's also worth looking here:

I believe they both deserve a lot more attention :)

Personally, I'd have to say either John Howe, Donato, or Paul Bonner.

Patrick - there are a number of female artists, though they are definitely rarer. Terese Nielsen and Shelley Wan are both very talented, for example.
