Quote of the Day

But the paradox, some would say tragedy, of human existence is that we so easily raise our lives about absence. We are bred for it. Men are forever counting their losses, hoarding them. There is meaning to be found in victimization, and no small justification. To be wronged is to be owed, to walk among debtors wherever you go.

Gotta be honest... I'm really not feeling the Bakker quotes.

And to paint yourself a victim is to make yourself one.

Hi,
sorry, didn't get it!!!

That sounded like what Bakker wrote in the prologue to "the darkness that comes before". There was a dude and his dogs, who was the first person Khellus met in the wilderness. I was whining about how unfair the world had treted him etc... Please Bakker, you are a wonderrful writer, but I´m kinds getting tired of all the smart ass philosophy you throw at us. Write great stories and I´ll be there the first day, continue writing very short novels, like the judging eye, with lots of philosophical musings and your next book will be the last one I read!

What are you talking about, Anonymous? It seems quite clear that the quote is simply about the human tendency for navel-gazing and wallowing in self-pity which I think many are familiar with. The language is archaic but not too much to obscure the point

Well, I'm not Anon#1, but to me the problem is in Bakker's writing style. All these philosophical musings are written as sermons. You know, the italics showing a place for stressing and/or dramatical pause, etc.

Reading a Bakker book is like reading a politician's/clergyman's/whathaveyou's speech that goes on and on. Zzzzzzzz.
