The character is Lucky Luke. He's an icon in Europe, but people who don't live there are unlikely to recognize him.
I'm slightly surprised Pat knows of Lucky Luke. I only know about him because my father was Dutch, and I found Lucky Luke comics on visits to my Dutch relatives when I was a kid.
A lot of Lucky Luke comics are appearing in English for the first time over the past couple of years, thanks to a British company. Formerly, only a dozen or so were ever translated into English, but now around 30 can be found via Amazon and similar sites. They are very humorous Wild West stories, which adults can enjoy, though children are the target audience.
It's Lucky Luke. The comics were originally written in French. Although they've been translated into English, they're probably better known in Europe and Quebec than elsewhere.
If you don't get it it's just becouse this cowboy pal, Lucky Luke, is not known outside Europe. He was created in French and appeared in comic books for children, although they are funny and intelligent so I highly recommend them to adults. Lucky Luke also had his cartoon TV series and even live action movie.
So... In the Empire strikes back Darth Vader reveals his dark secret, he is the father of Luke Skywalker. As the famous revealing sentence says: "Luke, I'm your father."
The other character is Lucky Luke, a famous comics character. Here you can find more details about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Luke

I used to watch the cartoon all the time, it was on TV here in Australia.
I watched it in French as a kid growing up in West Africa so maybe that's how Pat knows it. Montreal being all "Frenchy" :-)
