MODELLAND gets a positive review from Publishers Weekly

Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you! Publishers Weekly actually gave Tyra Banks' Modelland (Canada, USA, Europe) a positive review.

Here's a brief extract:

Banks throws a nonstop barrage of surrealism and wackiness at her characters: the male model academy is “Bestosterone”; Golden Ticket–like items called “SM-IZEs”—one of many winks to Top Model fans—help girls get into Modelland, etc. And if the resulting novel is overlong, the combination of absurdity, social commentary, and familiar tropes makes it an enjoyable guilty pleasure.

Okay - so if the whole idea behind it was to write something tongue-in-cheek for the sake of getting a laugh from models, and whoever else can appreciate it - that's at least the most generous way of looking at it that I can think of. Too bad she comes off looking like she's insulting the fantasy genre in the process, but it comes as relief that she had no apparent interest in attracting its normal audience.

Does anyone else think maybe this was ghost written? I suppose she could've written it herself, too. But, for the love of god, why? There are many great authors out there who will probably never get an advance like the one Tyra received for this piece of disposable garbage.
Anyone looking for a definite sign of the apocalypse, look no further than Modelland.

If it wasn't for celebrities authors like Stephenie Meyer and others wouldn't get the chance, I am not saying the novel Tyra Banks wrote would be my cup of tea, but the money the stars get and yes their books are likely ghost written will enable publishers to take a chance on a novice writer.

I'm not a Stephanie Meyer fan, but while she may be "celebrity" now she surely wasn't before she got Twilight published.

Just to clear something up, Tyra Banks published this novel through her own publishing company. This means that her novel was not accepted by a publisher, and she was not given an advance.

Wow. I used to respect PW. Not so much, now.

Has anyone here actually read the book?
I don't know but mocking a novel that one hasn't read is something you'd often find with people who disregard fantasy literature.
I feel slightly uneasy to see them same attitude here...

I rarely ever see a bad review from Publisher Weekly..

I will mock this novel with impunity and so should you.

I read an excerpt Pat posted here and I feel no unease whatsoever, it deserves all the ridicule we can muster.

I just finished reading it, lord help me, it is one of the most gruelling experiences of my life (and I gave birth birth after 18 hours of labor).

The excerpt you read is just the tip of the iceberg, La Tara has created her own language; SM-Ize, leGizzards, 7Seven and Bestosteros are just a few of the more colorful terms for made up @$i%.

There's romancing with thumb sucking, walking the plank while wearing skanky lingerie and Intoxihella's (the evil counterparts to Intoxibellas) I am not making this crapola up. I need chocolate and a warm puppy.

Wonder if Pat will review this.
