This from The Hollywood Reporter:
With author George R.R. Martin's HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones one of the hottest things on TV right now, it's fitting that another Martin-penned project has caught Hollywood's eye.
Syfy Films, the theatrical division created in December 2010 as a joint venture between Syfy and Universal Pictures, has acquired the screen rights to Wild Cards, a superhero anthology edited, co-created and co-written by Martin.
Melinda Snodgrass, one of the co-creators and co-writers, has been tapped to pen the screenplay for the project, which marks Syfy Films' first acquisition. Martin and Snodgrass will executive produce.
Wild Cards is a series of books and stories set in a shared universe where an alien virus has been unleashed over New York City. Those who survived were turned into either a class of beings named Jokers, mostly deformed creatures, (or more rarely) Aces, who have special powers.
The first book was published in 1987, around the same time as such work as Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore's The Watchmen were being hailed as revolutionizing the comics scene.

That's good news, true. But not so sure about a SyFy production. . .

agreed - yet another thing to waste GRRM's time - book 6, coming to you no earlier than 2016
I love how every sci-fi/fantasy blog is posting this, as if there are more than fifteen people who actually give a shit about Wild Cards.
Just to be clear, this is a completely different (and new) division of SyFy from the side that makes films like "Mansquito" and "SS Doomtrooper". (The fact that Universal Pictures partnered up with them should say a lot about their legitimacy :-)
Melinda has worked extremely hard behind the scenes for many years to make this happen. And Gregory Noveck is a tried-and-true SF lover. I've met him. He's for real. Between Noveck, and Melinda and George's participation, the project is in good hands :-)
Oh dear - another reason Mr Martin will have for his slow progress - he is developing a new medical syndrome - Literary Parkinsonism - to be be defined as Martinism - a syndrome of progressive slowness in completing a literary task due to delusions of cathode ray related grandeur
Somehow I always imagine the name "Brandon Sanderson" spoken with the voice of Cartman. I can't quite rationalize why.
I too have always wanted this to happen. I have little interest in Ice and Fire until it's done. GRRM has used many, many more distractions than this... It should also be noted that Melinda Snodgrass is going to be taking the bulk of the work for this.
If you've never read it I highly recommend it. It's Watchmen, only better...
"It's Watchmen, only better..."
Probably because Watchmen is subversive, so not really the same thing.
