I grew up reading C.J.and enjoyed her books immensely. What always amazed me about fantasy/sci-fi writers of the 70's is how they were able to tell a story in around 300 pages that would most likely take today's authors 600+.

This was a convention of the time: Books had to fit on a revolving wire rack and larger works were more expensive to print, but despite, or perhaps, because of these restrictions, they were able to create succinct tales that covered all the bases and were very enjoyable to read.
