The first three volumes of the House War series act as prequels to the Sun Sword, which I've been raving about these last few months. I wasn't sure whether or not this series made for a better entry point in Michelle West's Essalieyan saga, but a few people on malazanempire.com elected to begin with this book and they're loving it.
