SF Signal MIND MELD

I was asked to participate in SF Signal's latest Mind Meld:

The television adaptation of Game of Thrones was an immediate hit. What other fantasy novel(s) do you think would make an excellent weekly series? What, if anything, would you change for the small screen?

I haven't read your list yet, but right off I'd have to say Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, if done properly. Also, the Thieves World books.

someone mentioned Stanek's books. Awesome

Haven't read the whole article yet, but I was pleased you did a sci-fi thing, especially two of my favorite books: Altered Carbon and Chasm City. And you're correct, they would be great human interest stories, but I doubt that's the way Hollywood would go with those books. HBO might.

Stanek certainly seems to believe that his books will someday filmed. He has a website http://www.ruinmistmovie.com/ which mentions that there has been interest from movie studios including Dreamworks and MGM.

Although one of his fans (who recently wrote a review for Game of Thrones) thinks TV would be better:

This review is from: A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book One (Paperback)
People have been telling me for years to read Martin, since they know I'm a huge fantasy fan - my favorite authors being the three great Roberts: Newcomb, Jordon and Stanek. I've been enjoying the HBO series, so I finally read this book to see what all the fuss was about. It is certainly entertaining and reminds me a lot of Mr. Stanek's Keeper Martin's Tale (Ruin Mist Chronicles, Book 1)with the lack of widespread magic and multiple POV's. I was a bit disappointed in the writing, since it wasn't that descriptive and I had a hard time picturing what the characters and lands looked like. Luckily I have HBO, so the TV series has been helping a lot in that department. And with the fifth novel coming out this summer I have thousands of pages to keep me occupied while waiting for the sequel to Rise of the Fallen (Ruin Mist: Dawn of the Ages, Book 1). I'm hoping the success of HBO Game of Throne's will lead to adaptations of other modern fantasy masterpieces such as Jordan's Wheel of Time and Stanek's Ruinmist saga.

I reckon that the Dresden Files would make for great TV. Pretty girls, guns and fireballs, cabbage patch dolls drinking whiskey and chewing snuff... It's all action and eye candy.

amysrevenge: re Dresden Files. Syfy has already done it.

The Dresden Files was pretty good, but unfortunately only last one season of 12 episodes. Some of the plotting a little shakey, but by the last several episodes it was really coming together. You can watch it all on-demand if you have Netflix.

I threw Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy into the pot and for SF Neal Asher's Polity series of novels.

Ahh. Options in Canadia (for non-shady types) are limited...
