I would like to clarify an important point that is often the source of confusion: I am a novelist; I am not, in the essential sense, a fantasy author.

Well, normally it annoys me, when (more or less) succesful authors say they are definately not fantasy authors because fantasy is bad and they are afraid to be looked down upon...
But in this case:
HOORAY! :D
I've said it before and I'll say it gain. Does this fool not see the TOR FANTSY logo on the spine of his books? Does he NOT see where his books are shelved?
Ah, ah, ah !
(Ca passe dans toutes les langues, sorry Pat. ;) )
Goodkind thinks he's not a fantasy author, but he's wrong. I've never heard of anything he's written that isn't fantasy, he writes for fantasy imprints - the guy is a fantasy author.
Terry is delusional. Anyone who takes an objective (pun? lol) look at this quote will see it as the pretentious bullshit it is.
I think Terry should let his books say whether or not he is a fantasy writer. In this case, yes, he is a fantasy writer - and a poor one.
Sorry, Goodkind, I don't consider your books great literature. They don't even pass as cheap genre fiction. I hope Terry wouldn't consider this a brick thrown through his window.
Let me guess, this quote was in some non-genre, mainstream media....
BTW, ROFL at his silly "source of confusion" -- no one's confused. Everyone knows he's a fantasy author. He may be confused, though.... ;-)
query: how many writers have made objections against the label "fantasy"? I only know of Goodkind and Rowling, but aren't there more?
I think this goes under the cliche of "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."
I have the first Goodkind book, because someone recommended it to me. I didn't like it. The beginning was OK, then there was some weird torture and I thought, "Ummm...," but the Star Wars rip-off ending annoyed me.
The man is just wacky.
Shit! I bought this Goodkind kid's book. I think it was called Pillars of Creation.
Anyways, it's all about this girl and a goat and some dude that grabs random rats and bites their heads off. OK, it's about that and then it's suddenly about communism as well at the end. lol. Oh, and of course the evil commies are on the same plane of stupidness as the three stooges.
At least I don't remember any egotistical, hammer-to-brain twenty page speeches in which the author possesses the main character and babbles over and over the same extremist political agenda that could be condensed to a few sentences or a paragraph.
Trying to remember... Has he written any non-fantasy novels?
Let's see...the first word of the title of the first book is Wizard's. The series features a magic sword. The main character is a wizard from a family of wizards.
Historical Romance: Check.
