I was a bit disappointed that my trip to Europe last summer would make me miss M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening. His last few movies pretty much sucked, but I'm always intrigued by the stuff he comes up with.
Finally saw it last night. Man, it was awful. . . Just AWFUL!!! Utter fucking shit, pure and simple! How could it be SOOOOO bad??? I feel that downloading porn for 90 minutes would have been a more worthwhile pursuit. This movie was a crapfest from start to finish.
The Sixth Sense was brilliant. But the more I think about it, the more I begin to realize that it was probably a fluke. Shyamalan was supposed to be the next big thing in the film industry, the Steven Spielberg of the 21st century. Well, after a string of stinkers (Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, and Lady in the Water), I would go as far as claim that M. Night Shyamalan could well be the most overrated director in the industry.
The Happening takes the cake for worst film of Shyamalan's career thus far. I think it's time for him to direct and let someone else write these scripts. . .
Bad, bad, bad. . .

I thought Unbreakable and Signs were actually decent.
I liked Unbreakable quite a lot. My daughter lent me the DVD and I watched it twice in a row, something I'd never done before.
Maybe you could tell us what you specifically didn't like in The Happening. Just saying it was bad isn't very informative.
Every review of "The Happening" I have read says basically the same thing. Awful awful awful. "The Sixth Sense" probably was a fluke.
I hate to name drop, but if you guys were ever fans of MST3K; you should try watching The Happening with Rifftrax http://www.rifftrax.com/rifftrax/happening
It actually makes the experience fun. Their Happening riff is actually one of the better of the more recent ones.
I thought that Unbreakable was great, and that M. Night was supposed to be the next Hitchcock, not Spielberg. :)
I also liked Unbreakable. But I hated Signs and have not seen the other movies.
Hmmmm. I haven't seen The Happening, but I disagree about Signs and the Village. I enjoyed Signs a lot, it even gave me a few scares the first time I saw it. The Village was good, not scary, but interesting, a good flick. I've heard great things about Unbreakable, and I want to see that, and as for Lady in the Water, ummmmmmm, yeah. A tad weird. Not horrible, but weird.
I liked Unbreakable a lot, Signs and The Village were good.
Lady in the Water was alright.
The Happening should have been called The Crappening.
Unbreakable was a great movie, but it lost a lot of the audience who got confused over its tone. Signs was okay, but the ending was disappointing. The Village was again okay with some great ideas, but the ending twist was too cheesy. I haven't really liked the look of the latest two movies.
Unbreakable was at least watchable. Signs was a huge let down at the end, though there was some good tension building early on. Never saw the Village or Lady in The Water but did watch the Happening. I agree with Pat on this one - it was terrible. The cause was basically told to you even though it was blatantly obvious. But the biggest issue was that it never went anywhere or did anything. Awful movie.
Unbreakable and Signs were both very good movies. Heck, that part in Signs where the alien pops out at that birthday party still makes me jump.
Unbreakable was all right. But coming on the heels of The Sixth Sense, everyone expected to be blown away by Shyamalan second movie. Which is why it failed to "wow" audience.
Signs started out quite well, but in the end it turned out to be a disappoitment. Still, both Unbreakable and Signs were okay, just nothing to write home about.
The Village had some good idea, but the execution was kind of a letdown. Once again, an okay movie when everyone thought it would be a great one.
Lady in the Water was just too weird.
But The Happening is just plain awful. Bad plot, poor execution, just 90 minutes of crap that won't end.
He's definitely a love him or hate him type of deal. The only thing he has done that I can't get into was The Happening. I've never seen such terrible acting from people who I usually admire.
Agreed. It was tragically lame.
I liked Unbreakable too..and Lady in the Water...but you're right, The Happening sucked and blew!
Shyamalan intended The Happening to be a "B" movie, as was most popular in the 70's. Anyone with a firm understanding of art/ storytelling will appreciate it even if they don't like it. In fact, I was quit impressed with how little of a story he had and what he made of it.
I liked Signs up until the very end, but Unbreakable had to be his best. He added reason to the superhero character, demystified them if you will and in effect, raised the bar of human ability, as least whiling watching the movie.
What's really great about Shyamalan is he doesn't do the same thing over and over again as most people prefer. You read two Grisham novels and you've read them all, but every Shyamalan movie is distinct, which is the most important aspect of a mature storyteller.
everything what the anony-mouse before me posted... plus i think lady in the water was very beautiful. i think it's kind of a fairy-tale for grown ups, sparkling up your imagination when you can still touch your inner child.
and man, live would be boring and useless as hell if you wouldn't be able to feel your inner child i believe...
I actually thought Unbreakable was better than the Sixth sense. Thought the latter was only barely saved by the ending..
Signs was crap.
I think I'm with a lot of people here....what was it specifically about The Happening that you didn't like? Personally, the trailers held no appeal for me, so I have no desire to see it, but I am curious as to what sucked about it.
I've only seen Unbreakables and The Sixth Sense by Shyamalan and I thought they both were good. I liked the twist on the superhero angle in Unbreakables and I so didn't see the ending coming until the end for The Sixth Sense.
If The Happening was suppose to be a "B" movie, then I'll watch it when it appears on SciFi's Bad Movie Saturday lineup instead of trying to rent or borrow it. :)
The village and unbreakable were very good...but the sixth sense was the crown jewel
