AVATAR movie trailer

When the teaser trailer came out this summer, I was super excited! Avatar is probably my most eagerly awaited movie of 2009.

But this second trailer gives us an inkling of the story, and it sounds kind of meh. The visual effects appear to be unreal, but story-wise this one might not fly too high. We've seen this sort of plot a hundred times. . .:/

Hopefully I'm wrong. . .

The effect look great but the plot seems like Fern Gully or Pocahontas.

It doesn't matter what the story frame is. All that matters is that this is James Cameron. The guy has yet to make a movie that hasn't turned into a classic. Until proven wrong, I'll expect from everything he touches to be pure gold.

On what planet are True Lies, The Abyss, and Rambo 2 classics? And that's pretty much half his movies. T1, T2, Aliens and I suppose Titanic could be called classics of a sort, but those first three? Not in a million years.

Avatar looks like a videogame, and its shaping up to have the same story depth and intelligence as your average Halo game.

I also thought Pocahontas immediately.

srsly?

who cares if the plots been done before?

just about every book I've ever read (don't care to count how many) is a plot or a similar plot to something I've seen before...that doesn't make it old - it just makes it different. (the old "there's no such thing as original thought" argument)

what counts is the story being told in an interesting manner - and this interests me...if for nothing more than the colors LoL

The Abyss is totally a classic on this planet. I will reserve judgement on this film after I see it.

Er... Rambo 2 isn't Cameron's. And both the Abyss and True Lies are among the best in their genres. Besides, when you have T1, T2, Aliens and Titanic in your filmography, it sort of doesn't matter, does it? I mean, no one can boast such a portofolio. Even Spielberg has his fair share of failures, and the only one of Cameron's hasn't actually been directed by him.

So the plot is basically going to war in Iraq for oil... I mean, ah... going to war in "Pandora" for some precious "crystals"...

Yeah, Captain Obvious. I'm pretty sure that's EXACTLY what Cameron intended when he started the script FOURTEEN YEARS AGO...

Besides, he's all about the eco shit. He couldn't care less about wars...

I'm with you, Pat. James Cameron's movies have the subtlety of a mallet. His plots are usually about as, well, unsophisticated as you can get. It looks like in Avatar he's going to conquer 'Colonialism' since in Titanic he got 'Classism' out of the way.

But Leonardo Dicaprio was dreamy and the vertical Titanic rocked my world, so I forgive him. And blue cat people with mohawks on flying lizards look pretty frakking cool. I can't wait to see it!

I just hope the humans eat dome dust.

I just can't get on board with those stupid Mech designs. Worst fictional piece of hardware ever. They were stupid in the matrix movies and they're stupid in the context of this movie.

James Cameron's movies have never been about the story. Aliens: Humans trying to survive horrifying monsters from beyond our solar system. Paper thin story, but well executed. Terminator: Outsider humans hunted from future deadly robot that looks like a human and, in part 2, could be anyone. Paper thin story, but well executed. Terminator: A movie about a ship that sank nearly 100 years ago and, ah, there's some sort of quick booty call stuck in there in between. Not-even paper thin, but well executed.

James Cameron stories have never and will never be about the stories. The Terminator "franchise" has fallen apart after Cameron stopped making them -- because they were never about the story, there's no where near enough story there, they were only good because Cameron is great on execution, great with special effects and great with making things appear polished.

But let's not suddenly start criticizing AVATAR before it's out because the film's plot seems rather thin -- his movies have always had weak plots, he just makes them so well that no one bothers to notice.

The Abyss is his best film, I freakin' love it!

I'm going for the eye candy and if there's an entertaining story then I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The most interesting part of this movie will be the aliens, but I have a feeling their story will be hindered by excessive aggro military crap. Starship Troopers was another movie that comes to mind wasted in this fashion.

I will see it because I'm hopefully wrong.

I understand the reservations towards the story, but at worst, it'll only be one of the best movies of 2009 and its kind.

This has the zest, competence and soul of a classic. I can't understand the complaints. I think they come merely from the low quality that is these days associated with cinema, but not from any direct lack of this one's promise and presentation.
Unlike Spielberg, Cameron is still alive and kicking.
