it's not really a review. it's more like "these characters are in the book, and then some more"

no big deal

I didn't see any spoilers (assuming you've read the first four books). But basically, it just says the book is a lot like Feast (political intrigue is the primary conflict)

You need to read the article, really. Not so much spoilers as tasty tidbits that make you can hardly stand the wait.

There's a couple of minor spoilery things in it, but nothing that should do anymore than serve to whet the appetite of the impatient fan.

Pat, are you in love with George R.R.? Because I have yet to experience this level of fan-boy arse-licking. Bad news fantasy fans; George R.R. is NOT the second coming of Tolkien. He will drag this series out into frustrating mediocrity until he dies and they have to hire a second rate Brandon Sanderson to complete the thing from Martin's "notes". Honestly, the last book (in actuality half a book) was completely frustrating and sub par. Sounds like George did the same thing with this latest volume. Rushing to cash on on the HBO series after a, what, five year wait? Certainly didn't ruch for his fan base. Guy just isn't as good as he is given credit for, and I loved the first two. That being said I refuse to re-read these books again, I've have forgotten what I did read years ago when the last book arrived, and the series isn't that good either. In short George R,R, has worn out his welcome...

Damn right it's a spoiler he said Tyrion was kidnapped by slavers.

I second Anonymous. I loved the first two volumes, then, everything is dragging. 5 years to publish an already written book (that is what he said) ... I do not believe it. He is cashing on his sucess. And things like Thyrion captured by slavers reeks of plot-delaying.

Anonymous No. 2: GRRM not the 2nd coming of Tolkien? I seriously doubt that's his intention. Isn't as good as he's given credit for? You forgot to add "in my opinion". I don't think Tolkien is as good as he's given credit for... Fine and good if he's worn out his welcome for you. Thankfully no one is forcing you to read his books.

@JeFF: Actually, Tyrion getting kidnapped by slavers sounds more like a good way to bring him to Slaver's Bay. Which is run by a certain Targaryen Khaleesi.

I also stopped reading after two and will not come back until the series is complete. And maybe not then (I certainly see no reason to go back to Jordan.)

I'm going to withhold judgment until I've read it, but this review does not pique my interest in a good way.

The Tyrion tidbit seems a distraction, as I was hoping he'd get Tyrion where he needed to be (with Dany, presumably) well before the close of the novel and not spend too much intervening time on a tertiary plotline about how the f@#% he got there.

Also, the review states we're only getting certain tidbits about key information. I'm sorry, but if this novel doesn't lay to rest some key issues--namely, Jon's parentage and why the heck Bran is north of the wall--then I'll be severely disappointed.

It seems Martin went wrong when he abandoned the 5-year-gap and a lot of these minor plots could have been discussed via flashback so that we speed up to the real showdown. 4 books of prologue is enough....The showdown between the Others and the Dragons is too far off.

On another note, I wonder how fans will react to the HBO show when they realize that Dany isn't crossing the sea ANYTIME soon. Not for years and years, in fact. All my non-reader friends seem to think Khal Drogo is going to kick some ass next season....boy will they be surprised. But in a good way? The Dany plot may wear thin on television when it becomes apparent she's in a very, very long holding pattern.

I think that Pat should disable anonymous posting - it seems to bring out the worst in people.

I do agree with Anon in one thing, "George RR Marin isn't the second coming of Tolkien." No, he's not...he's BETTER THAN TOLKIEN. Because he can write realistic female characters and doesn't avoid sex.

GRRM is going to die before he finishes the series, but he won't have the consideration to leave notes so that the series can have closure (he already has stated as much). Anyways, I really don't think Martin has any idea where the series is going.

As a side note, at least Jordan was kind enough to pen the end of the series and allow another author to fill in the gaps.
