Quote of the Day

I'm just saying, the reason blacks rule music these days is because their songs are about fun and sex. The guys sing about getting bling and finding fresh pussy, and the girls sing about getting bling and cutting the nuts off the guys who screwed them over, huh? White musicians are singing about angst and the cruel world and how nothing's any damned good. What's the fun in that? Who's going to dance to that beat, huh?

racist bullshit.

I think the quote is meant to be humorous Yona. It does feel a little...off out of context though.

I agree Yona, saying that people can't / wouldn't want to listen/dance to white music was quite insensitive...

"the only racism I see is when it is directed at my own race" - a far too common mentality

Everyone sterotypes all the time. Can you call Robert's statements completely off base? I can't. And since he was not blatenly trying to harm anyone with his statement...I would probably shy away from callin the man a racist.

Sex is fun, and self-loathing isnt. (in that Robert and I can agree)

cool down. i was not calling anyone a racist. i referred to the text which all that was given to me in this post. i dont know the book or if it is in anyway the opinion of the author... but i can only work with what i get...

and the racism here is that "all blacks" are singing about pussy and drugs, and "all whites" about angst... both ways are far from true.
and making jokes about rap music is ... well it was funny 20 years ago i guess. or it is still funny if you are 60 years old

To be fair, it is a character talking within a very good book.

It is racist. It's stereotyping. It's generalising. It is offensive. And if it is supposed to be humourous in context (maybe it comes from the mouth of a dickhead character?) it isn't out of context.

This doesn't quite work because I can't find a clip of the depressed Father Kevin being enormously cheered up by and dancing to Shaft. Anyway, then this happens:

The character that states this is the host of a cable access TV show about music. He's telling the leader singer of The Five that he should know his role and stick with it. It represents the thinking of people in the music business, and if you find the quote offensive...well, you're supposed to. The character in the novel is offensive.
