Patrick Rothfuss just wrote a post regarding the delay of his forthcoming The Wise Man's Fear. You can read the whole thing here.
Here's an excerpt:
Okay folks, here's the deal....
Whatever release date you've heard for book two is simply untrue. There is no release date because the book isn't finished yet. I'm working on it right now. Or rather, I would be working on it if I wasn't writing this blog.
Yeah. It sucks. I wish it was finished too. My life would be really great right now if book two were done.
I've been avoiding writing this blog for a while. It's not fun to write, and it's not going to be fun for most people to read. The truth is, I'd much rather work on the book.
But recently, a remarkably courteous and lucid e-mail from a fan made me realize that a lot of people out there are more curious than pissed about it.
So. There's the news. The Wise Man's Fear won't be out for a while. This won't come as a surprise to many of you. Especially those who know not to trust everything Amazon says. Plus, I've been pretty open about the fact that I'm still working on revisions.
You see, even if I finished the book today and it was perfect, it couldn't be on the shelves by April. It takes a long time to get a book into print. Months and months. There are a lot of steps.
Since many of you will be disappointed by this news, I figure the least I can do is explain why it's taking so long.

he really is a joy to read, whether its the Name of the Wind or a blog entry, I can't wait for the next book.
Heh, I would love to have my name in Wise Man's Fear :D
This has got to be the biggest downside about the Internet age from authors' perspectives. Sure they probably used to get a few odd letters in the mail prodding them to write faster before the 1990s - but then you also didn't have misleading info all over the Internet about release dates to egg on the hate mail, either.
I wonder if there's any hope that with another decade or two of experience all these people who complain will finally realize that delayed publication dates have been a reality since the dawn of the printing press and aren't unique to [fill in author's name]? Probably not much.
I gotta say the cartoon made me lol, which gifted me with a few odd looks at work. (=
Haha, the cartoon was awesome, but slightly ruined by the *delete* at the end.
But I am of the faction that supports both Rothfuss and Martin (not that I'm a huge fan of either), in that I support their case. I am of the Twain-school, if you will.
"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning
and the lightning bug."
I read the whole post. And to be honest I appreciate to get a view behind the curtain of an author.
Maybe the most interesting piece of news I found in this post;
AUTHORS ARE HUMAN BEINGS !!!!
QUOTE
“Before you begin a thing, remind yourself that difficulties and delays quite impossible to foresee are ahead. If you could see them clearly, naturally you could do a great deal to get rid of them but you can’t. You can only see one thing clearly and that is your goal. Form a mental vision of that and cling to it through thick and thin.”
Kathleen Norris
What pisses me off the most is that the public was told it was finished and would be published soon.
Very disappointing news, but not surprising.
Angels all around you, Patrick!
The most delicious book I've read since Ursula K. LeGuin's.
i look forward to the book whenever it comes out, amazon.com still says april but i guess not. i know i read online that rothfuss had finished all three books already, i guess that wasn't true. i enjoyed the name of the wind a lot though, and love that rothfuss lists peter s beagle among his favorite authors. fans awaiting the next kingkiller book should check out 'we never talk about my brother' in the meantime by peter s beagle, it has something for everyone, especially fans of good fantasy fiction.
Take your time, whenever it does come out I will appreciate it all the more....

I was a little said to hear that the second book would not be out anytime soon. Then I figured what the hell! I would rather have the second book be terrific then a piece of crap! I loved the name of the wind and would willingly wait until 2025 if I had to to read the second book!
I can wait, as long as this doesn't turn into another WOT situation.
I don't think I could handle that.
Or Song of Ice and Fire situation.
Or Sword of Truth situation...
I just finished the book. It got me through most of swine flu. It's a true masterpiece, with great verisimilitude.
I agree with the "Wheel of Time" Comment, I enjoyed his first book, but if every book is going to take 3 or 4 years to come out, I'll probably just forget the whole thing and find other authors to read.
Okay, although I'm a bit disappointed ( cause I believed in that Amazon releasing Date stuff) I've learned sth for the furure: Never do it again... Patrick, just relax, this is a fantastic book and in my opinion great stories just need time and patience to be told..while waiting for the second book to be finished I simply have to read the first one again and again...:-)
