I don't recall how Martin described the food in the north, but I never imagined it as disgusting.
I always thought of it as plain fare, maybe
a mixture of polish/german cuisine with a hint of scandinavian:
Various meats, some fish, cabbage, root vegetables, rye & barley based pasta & bread, dairy products, apples etc.
