Quote of the Day

"That's always the way with disasters," I said.

"What?"

"They're never bad news for everyone. Something nasty always rises to the top."

- ALASTAIR REYNOLDS, Chasm City (Canada, USA, Europe)

A little more than halfway through, and we're looking at a perfect score so far!

Yep, that's a great book. Loved it!

Icepick, Pat spent hours of his time reading /writing a review for your (our) reading pleasure. Could you at least spend more the 5 seconds on your insult? At least the other guys spend the time to look at every review and see exactly what score he gave.

Do you even know what you are making fun of? Pat's system has been knocked for its arbitrary .25's, not for giving amazing books mediocre scores. Way to draw a correlation that made no sense. (perhaps if you would have said "10.25" it might have been slightly ironic and humorous)

^ Wow, overreact much? It was obviously intended as a joke. I appreciate the time, thought, and effort that Pat puts into his reviews, but just for kicks I would love to see a histogram of all of his review scores. Just a guess, but I'm thinking it's not bell-shaped.

Um, so? The bell curve doesn't apply to everything in life. I certainly wouldn't expect it to apply to a reviewer's reviews. *goes away, scratching head*

Actually Anon...if you read this blog on a daily basis, you would see that some rando tries to make fun of Pat's scoring system in every blog. I guess Icepick thought he was being witty (especially with the smiley face)...but really, I think all of us readers are just getting tired of it. Ya, we get it, Pat has a unique scoring system. And yes, rando commenter thinks he's funny (thanks for sharing that with the world). But dumping on Pat doesnt do an service to his blog.

"Rando"? I've been reading this blog for 2 years and have commented multiple times. I could call you a "rando" too and it would have as much meaning. And yes, it was a joke, not an insult. With perhaps 1 exception, Pat's last 10 or so reviews have scored between 7 and 8, and at least 5 of those have been 7.75.

So yes, I know exactly what I'm making fun of. As it happens, Pat is basically where I get most of my information about what books I'm going to read, and the fact that he posted my comment shows he's not above a little good natured ribbing. So I'm forced to go with the Anon guy on this one: overreact much?
