New 20th Anniversary cover art for L. E. Modesitt, jr.'s THE MAGIC OF RECLUCE

Speaking of Modesitt, call me "old school" but I really hate the new cover art that will grace the 20th anniversary edition of The Magic of Recluce (Canada, USA, Europe).

The original Darrel K. Sweet cover is the reason why I picked it up, nearly two decades ago. Man, this last statement makes me feel old!

Kudos to L. E. Modesitt, jr. and Tor Books for keeping this novel in print for 20 years! =)

So you like covers that feature a horse's rear end?

I agree Pat. I prefer the old cover. That's one of the things I like about the series..their old style covers. This new one reminds me a bit of the Deryni re-issued hardcovers from a few years ago.

This is one series I've always wanted to read, but, alas, I've shyed away from it..

The series seems (from nay sayers) to be uneven and dull. I dunno. Looks interesting, and perhaps I will blow the dust off my old paperback and give it a shot.

I like the new cover. This was actually one of my favorite books. I'm not sure how much I can relate to it now, as an adult, but as a 15-year old kid who was bored with life, I obviously found the main character extremely relatable. Btw, the main character is in fact, a 15 year old kid who is bored with life.

This is a series I might have to try again, since I've been in the mood for some classic 80s/90s fat fantasy. It's funny -- I remember looking at Sweet's cover art and checking out the first book from the library when I was maybe 17 - but less b/c I loved the art, and more b/c the font, artist and tor logo made me think I'd get a WoT-ish experience. I got halfway through and don't remember a damned thing about the book.

the cover kinds of twists the story. the appearence of lerris and the scene are not as i remember them.

and lerris is older than that, i think.

I like the original cover better I've recently been thinking about finding and rereading this series.

I don't like either cover. Both are highly unrealistic, and realism is my holy grail for cover art. I especially hate the overly bright coloring of the original cover. It reminds me of the terrible covers for the Wheel of Time books. Give me Alan Lee any day.

Does anyone else think the original one looks almost exactly like the Robert Jordan wheel of Time covers?

The artistic style, color scheme, and even the fonts are very reminiscent of the WoT covers.

I prefer the old cover myself, it drew my eyes to it and that's why I picked it up (and of course, read the series)

I wonder how many books have been sold just based on a cover by Darrel K. Sweet? I used to collect the limited edition trading cards of his work, I loved his work so much. It's sad to realize that his stuff is slowly being supplanted.

The only thing I remember about this book (and I remember it often) is that at one point the character compares something to a Chinese vase, and I'm thinking, "How the heck does he know what a Chinese vase looks like?"
