New dates for the Pat's Fantasy Hotlist World Tour!

Finally booked my flights yesterday, so it's now official!

Come June 2nd, I'll be flying away to beautiful Romania, the first country on my trip. My itinerary is nowhere near close to being done, but as things stand I'll be traveling through Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, with a couple of nights of partying in Belgrade, Serbia, at the end of my adventure.

If at all possible without having to curtail other segments of my trip, I will also try to visit parts of Moldova, Albania, and Kosovo.

I know that there are fans of the Hotlist from these parts, so I'll be letting you know in which cities/regions I'll be stopping when my itinerary is done. And maybe we can have a few drinks and shoot the shit when I'm in town! =)

Can't wait to travel overseas again!

Hey Pat, if you need some guidance or any help or just a drink in Sofia, let me know :) Do you have an email I can send contact information to?

(i'm Jorr on the malazan forums)

I spent about a month in Romania last summer for work. So if you want a bit of perspective from an American who spent a fair amount of time there and got quite a bit off the typical tourist path, let me know.

Jorro: You can contact me via the giveaway email address.

Ken: I'll probably be spending about two weeks in Romania. Probable destinations include Bucharest, Sinaia, Brasov, Sighisoara. If I elect to go to Moldova, I'll likely scrap some of my Transylvania destinations for something eastward. But I have to double back to Bucharest to go to Bulgaria, probably beginning in Ruse and/or Varna. So I can't afford to travel around extensively around Romania. Too bad, as I would have liked to head out to the west and the north, but that's the way love goes...

if you don't mind me asking, what do you do that allows you so much freedom to travel?

Bucharest is fun and underrated. The night-life is particularly lively since its a university town as well. But you won't need too long there - stay at least 2 days, but it doesn't take the time to see that some other European cities do.

Transylvania is very nice, but my time there was unfortunatly quite short. I loved Sibiu and the surrounding villages. Make sure you get up into the mountains (an easy trip from Brasov). I actually blogged a bit about Romania while I was there: http://nethspace.blogspot.com/search/label/Romania

I never made it eastward - it's a pretty big area and getting there will probaby take a fair amount of time.

Do not forget to visit Hungary! We're also very famous about the nice girls. ;)

Ken: Sibiu was on my first rough itinerary. Worth it? I wanted to do Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca, but in the end settled for what I have already mentioned.

Considering that I want to move around and must end my trip in Belgrade, I'm aware that I'll be missing out on some sights in Romania and the rest of the countries I'll travel through. That's one thing about traveling: You have to make tough decisions.

Anon: My latest South American adventure (and the same can be said of my Southeast Asian trip last year) were leaves of absence. So it's not like I have endless vacations! But some things are worth paying for!

Yay! Finally, you're coming our way too. If you need anything while in Romania, just give me a sign, we're here to serve. (And by "we", I mean the whole crew of Romania's Millennium Books). we can find you a guide in Bucharest and probably other parts of the country too, we know cheap and enjoyable places to eat and stay overnight, and I'll sure as hell take a trip to Sighisoara just to meet with you for at least a beer. too bad you don't intend to come to Maramures, in the north, I would've been happy to have you as a guest at my place and show you around.

I think that Sibiu was worth it, though I didn't overnight elsewhere for much comparison. When I asked a few Romanians that I know where the best place to visit in Transylania is for a very limited stay I consistently had two recommendations - Sibiu and Sighisoara.

I agree, Sibiu and Sighisoara are two places in Romania you need to see; Brasov and Bucharest as well. I'm sorry I won't be in Bucharest while you're there as I've been following your blog for quite a while now and would have liked to meet you. I hope you'll have fun and I'm sure you'll like our country and its people very much.
