I've never been a fan of McCaffrey's works, but I still remember my first reading of Pern's Dragons fondly.

She truly was a pioneer of women's place in the SFF microcosm along with Ursula Le Gin, opening the door for all other famous female authors to come.

So many firsts, I didn't know that. Together with Dune, she was my introduction to SF back in grade school. Glad someone pointed me to the "classics", her original trilogy Dragonflight / Dragonquest / White Dragon, ranks right up there. The later add-ons never quite measured up, but I hear the Harper Hall trilogy is also very good. I always took a blurb from AM on another author's cover to be a good sign ... she'll be missed.

I enjoyed her Pern books, especially the early ones tremendously. RIP

Not a fan, but my wife has read her stuff for years... She'll be saddened to hear this news. Unfortunately, many of the great sf/f writers are getting up there in age. I was finally able to speak to Jack Vance on the phone the other day since it is doubtful that I will ever get to meet him. So glad I did.

R.I.P. Anne Mcaffrey

She's a great "gateway author" for SFF neophytes. I've got plenty of her books waiting for my daughter to read when she's older.
