US cover art for Joe Abercrombie's THE HEROES

This was released today on the Orbit website.=)

And here's the blurb:

War: where the blood and dirt of the battlefield hide the dark deeds committed in the name of glory. THE HEROES is about violence and ambition, gruesome deaths and betrayals; and the brutal truth that no plan survives contact with enemy. The characters are the stars, as ever, and the message is dark: when it comes to war, there are no heroes…

Meet THE HEROES.

Curnden Craw: a ruthless fighter who wants nothing more than to see his crew survive.

Prince Calder: a liar and a coward, he will regain his crown by any means necessary.

Bremer dan Gorst: a master swordsman, a failed bodyguard, his honor will be restored—in the blood of his enemies.

Over three days, their fates will be sealed.

Sounds good to me!!!

Reading The Blade Itself right now, and it's good, but Best Served Cold was damn good.

I'm guessing this one might be a bit thinner as Bremer dan Gorst doesn't quite seem to have much in the way of vocabulary. That said, should be fun as always.

@alabrava, from abercrombie's website

"A few months ago I was concerned that it would end up really long – quite possibly my longest book yet. It’s drawn together a bit towards the end, though, and I’m intent on pruning it down as much as I possibly can in the editing, hoping to bring it in somewhere around the 210,000 mark. Still considerable, but not quite up to Best Served Cold or Last Argument of Kings, which were both around the 230,000.

I've heard this is going to be a "Western" of sorts, which sounds really interesting.

Though I loved the First Law Trilogy, "Best Served Cold" was dreadful. Character-driven novels need characters who one cares about, and the protagonist was boring, unoriginal, and altogether difficult to relate to. Another major character must have even bored Mr. Abercrombie, because he dropped his story arc like a hot potato halfway through the novel.

I'll give it this--it was different. Kill Bill of fantasy, sure, but it got old quickly.

I've commented on it before, but you've either never seen it, or have decided not to say anything about it, but Stephen Erikson has a Blog at Life as a Human:

He posted a new excerpt from The Crippled God last Thursday. You really should check it out!

@Nate Dawg, no, the "Western" is his next novel. I think he announced it as "if Best Served Cold is a fantasy-thriller, and The Heroes is a fantasy-war story, then the one after that will be a fantasy-western" or something like that.

He also mentioned in his blog comments that Shivers will have a pretty big role in this book, and that it takes place three years after BSC.

@Nate Dawg - which story arc are you referring to exactly? I don't recall any character's story being dropped half way through BSC...
