Malazan Map of the Lands of Fist

Copyright © Neil Gower 2010

This one's for Wert and other people like me who love to have maps in their fantasy books! I requested this one from the folks at Transworld, for I couldn't picture where the hell all the action was taking place in Stonewielder (Canada, USA, Europe).

So here you go: Korelri, Theft, Mare, Jourilan, Skolati, Fist, Stygg, Jasston, and more!

Stonewielder is awesome so far, by the way! Esslemont's best effort to date!

When I saw this I literally started yelling out of joy. Boy, I feel I shouldn’t be that hooked, but I really am. How much of the book have you read thus far Pat?

They should combine all the maps so we get a view of the whole world. And I'd be able to print it on poster size and hang in my room. :P

Did they say who did this map?

Lou,

It's based on Esslemont and Erikson's own maps, but the official one was done by Neil Gower.

If I'm not mistaken, this guy did all the Malazan maps so far...

The map is the north coast of the continent of Korel, which lies south-east of Malaz Isle (labelled 'Jakatakan' on this map), the origin of the Malazan Empire which is the primary political entity in the novels. Korelri has been mentioned since the first book came out in 1999, but this is the first map we have of it (although it is only partial).

The naming of the continent is interesting. 'Korelri' is apparently the full name of the landmass, with the northern part known as 'Korel' and the southern part known as 'Stratem' (not shown on this map), with the Aurgatt mountain range and the Sea of Chimes separating the two. However, the northern coastal area is apparently also called 'Fist' by the natives.

Are you certain of that Wert? I think its more like Korelri is the Country below Malaz Island, and Fist and Stratem are the names of the two half’s of the continent that is called Korel.

The nomenclature is confusing, probably because each island-landmass that makes up Korelri seems to have its own name for the continent. Korelri is definitely the most commonly-used name in the books going back to the appendix to GARDENS OF THE MOON, where Korel and Stratem are named as the subcontinents of Korelri.

Of course, that was from the Malazan POV, and the Malazan conquests are in the north, presumably facing the armies of Kor, Elri and Fist, all of whom probably claim to name the continent after themselves.

A more neutral POV is that of the Elder Gods, who name it Korelri in the prologue to MEMORIES OF ICE. It's also possible the different authors have difference preferences, with Erikson rarely using the word 'Fist' but ICE appearing to prefer it to 'Korelri' or any of its variations.
