and if it weren't for my antagonism of anything vampiric i would have liked to read it.

It's not very vampiric at all, machinery, so I'd say go ahead and give it a try if you like Weber's other Mil-SF. I actually kinda wish that part hadn't been spoiled for me actually.

Monster Hunter Vendetta making the list is awesome - those books are great (though they do contain vampires).

Out of the Dark. Oh come on. How unoriginal. I was disappointed and I had been looking forward to reading it.
Frankly this one and his latest Honor Harrington weren't as good as his early books. I found myself skimming rather than reading them.
